De-cluttering a house is probably the most boring task you can imagine–if you do not have a game plan to tidy up your home. Anyone can de-clutter, even those of us who swear that it is an ability that some are just born with. This is not entirely untrue, however. Some people just seem more organized than others. But for the rest of us, de-cluttering never ends, and if we ever want to see the floor again, we should develop a different way of thinking and a new cleaning lifestyle.

The first step to de-cluttering is to make a plan, a schedule, anything. It can be a half hour each day, two hours every Wednesday after yoga, whatever works for you. It does not really matter if you need to adjust your cleaning schedule, you will find what is best for you through experimentation. Don’t be afraid to have someone else help you as well. Now, you must isolate your first cleaning assignment- be it a drawer or a closet. If you clean too much the first day, you might find that you will lose your enthusiasm very quickly, so just start off small.

It is easiest to arrange items in bags, some to throw away, some to donate, some things to sell on the internet–whatever. If you have a hard time letting go of things you don’t really need, you are not alone! Just think about if you will need that object in a year’s time, or if someone else might need it more than you. Do not take anything for granted; if you don’t need it, you don’t need it, and you life will be better off without it.

The most important, and difficult part of de-cluttering is keeping your home de-cluttered. Face it, most people find their homes back to what appears to be a state of natural disaster in as little as 24 hours. De-cluttering is a lifestyle, and it is just not easy! But if you truly put your mind to it, you can de-clutter too. Creating new habits and getting rid of old ones will help you become a better, more organized person.
