fireplace maintenanceHaving a fireplace in your home is a very attractive and inviting feature for any home. It is a classic piece that is being featured in fewer and fewer modern homes. A fireplace is a real treat and maintaining it does not require a lot of time or money. It will also make a home easier to sell, as a fireplace is desirable, warm, and beautiful. Make sure to take care of your fireplace properly to keep it clean and functioning well. You also have to take some precautions for safety and to prevent chimney fires.

It is definitely necessary to find a great chimney sweeper in your area. While you can clean your chimney yourself, it would be unsafe to climb on a roof, and you will not have the professional skill to make the chimney completely clean. Not only do you want your chimney to be clean so there is less build up, but because it is a hazard to have a chimney full of debris. To avoid having a fire hazard, you only need to have your chimney professionally cleaned once a year by someone who has been trained to do it as a chimney cleaner.

If you do not have one already, you should invest in a chimney cover. This will allow the smoke to escape, but it will also keep any leaves or parts of trees from blocking your chimney, which can be a big fire hazard. Make sure that the chimney sweep inspects your chimney cover, too. It should be secure and if damaged, it will need to be replaced. If you do not have a chimney cover, you will also run a risk for small animals climbing into your chimney, which could cause dead animals to get caught inside, or lead to a vermin problem in your house.

You can also decorate the mantel with knick knacks and family photos. Even if you do not use your fireplace, it is a very beautiful centerpiece. If you do use it, make sure to use dry wood and keep it clean. Keep small children away from fires and if you do have a fire, keep it attended. You can enjoy your chimney for generations if you take care of it.
